How to read the table
- Ranges are honest, points are not. Rows give the band where typical models cluster; the figure for a specific product is on its spec sheet, and rows say which class of document to check.
- Idle, operating and maximum differ. Engine rows distinguish idle from redline; tool rows quote no-load speeds, which drop under load.
- The unit is identical throughout. A 15 rpm turbine rotor and a 300,000 rpm turbo shaft differ by a factor of 20,000 in the same unit; conversions to Hz and rad/s are in the converter set.
Why size dictates speed
The pattern in the table is tip speed and stress. A long blade or large drum reaches high edge speeds at low RPM: a wind turbine's blade tips move fast while the hub turns lazily US DOE2026-08. Small rotors must spin fast to do useful work, and bearing and material limits scale the other way. Machines land where their radius, load and materials let them, which is why the table spans five orders of magnitude without a single anomaly in it.
