The traffic half: clicks that never arrive
When a search interface answers a query on its own page, the publisher who supplied the answer loses the visit, the ad impressions and the RPM those impressions carried. Informational queries are hit hardest, which reshapes which of your pages still receive clicks. Note what this does to your dashboard: total revenue falls with traffic, while blended RPM can move either direction depending on whether your surviving clicks are higher or lower intent than the lost ones. A falling-traffic month with stable RPM is the mix effect described on why did my RPM drop, at industry scale.
The licensing half: a second per-mille economy
Two named pieces of infrastructure now exist to charge AI systems for access instead of giving it away with the crawl:
- Cloudflare pay-per-crawl Cloudflare blog2026-08: announced by Cloudflare in July 2025, it lets a site respond to AI crawlers with a payment challenge, so each crawl either pays the publisher's set price or is declined. Pricing is per crawl and set by the publisher.
- TollBit TollBit content licensing marketplace2026-08: a licensing marketplace that meters AI-agent access to publisher content and remits per-access fees under the publisher's terms.
The structural point: RPM priced human attention per 1,000 views; these systems price machine consumption per access. For reference and data-heavy sites, the second economy can monetize exactly the visits the first one is losing.
What a small publisher can actually do now
- Measure the exposure. Segment analytics by query intent: pages answering short factual queries are the AI-answer overlap; pages serving tools, calculators and multi-step decisions retain click reasons.
- Decide a crawler policy. Free crawling, blocked, or priced via pay-per-crawl Cloudflare blog2026-08 or a marketplace TollBit content licensing marketplace2026-08. Any of the three is defensible; not deciding is not.
- Rebuild around retained-click formats.Interactive tools and decision-grade comparisons keep earning ad RPM because a summary cannot substitute for them. This site's own calculator is that argument, made with a straight face.
- Diversify the revenue line so the RPM column is not the whole business: the options ladder is on how to increase RPM.
What this page will not do is quote a CTR-collapse percentage as if it were settled: the published studies disagree by methodology and quarter. When a dated, named figure stabilizes, it will appear here with its chip; until then the mechanism above is the reliable part.
