In a typical petrol manual that translates to upshifting around 2,000 to 2,500 rpm in gentle driving; turbo-diesels, making their torque lower, shift comfortably around 1,500 to 2,000 rpm (see why diesels sit lower). The floor matters as much as the ceiling: shifting so early that the next gear drops below roughly 1,500 rpm under load is lugging, which strains bearings and invites knock, per the wear mechanics on is high RPM bad.
The performance band
Maximum acceleration wants the engine held around its peak-power region, which for many petrol engines sits in the upper third of the rev range. The racing rule: shift so that after the shift the engine lands near peak torque, still pulling hard toward peak power. That means shifting near, not at, the redline in most road cars, because the post-shift drop lands you in the meat of the curve.
